men dress up in all kinds of clothes, and of every colour and go out early that morning "some go in cars", or on bicycles, and others go walking.
They bring musical instruments with them, and when they go to a place, they play them and dance. Then they go from house to house collecting money. If they get a good amount they have a big dance, and if they do not get a big amount they divide what they have got on each other. The dance they give is called a "mummmers-spree".
St. Patrick's day used to be called "the big day" long ago because on that day the men used to get drunk and be very noisy. They used to say they were drowning the shamrock. That is not done at all now, and it is far nicer. The people wear green badges, harps and shamrock in honour of St. Patrick.
Candlemas day, is so called because on that day, all the blessed candles that are to be used for the year are blessed in all the Churches.
