- About twenty years ago a great burning occurred in the Demesne beside Portumna. The house which was burned was the house that Princess Mary was coming to live in. The mansion was completely finished and all the furniture was in order because the next day the Princess was coming.
The Sinn-Feiners did not like this because they knew that the Black and Tans would settle down in Portumna. So one night about two o clock a crowd of Sinn-Feiners from Wood-Ford and Portumna came in motor care to burn it.
It is said that they left their cars in a boreen about a mile outside the town and that they crossed down through the Demesne. The building was burning for a couple of weeks.- Bailitheoir
