  1. On St Brigid's eve the man of the house gets a piece of straw and he makes a little cross leaving it about six or seven inches in length. He leaves it then on a rafter in the house. The people say that the crosses protects the house from bad-luck and misfortune. They leave them on them until they would begin to get bad. Also on that day the family of the house and their mother are told to go outside by the man. When they do so the man gets a bundle of rushes and throws them on the threshold. He then gets a bottle of holy water and throws it on them. Then he puts them up in the loft and leaves them there. He calls the family in then and they say a few prayers at the threshold while the man shakes the holy water on them. They say it protects the house from
