He started off to the lake and on reaching the spot where the washing used to be done, and where he intended to meet her, he was horrified to see nothing but blood and bones which showed plainly that his wife had been attacked and eaten by a wild animal.
The poor man's feelings at this discovery may be more easily imagined than described. He thought for some time and at last he concluded that his wife had been attacked by one of the monsters that were said to inhabit the lake.
He immediately resolved to revenge himself on the monster or person that had deprived him of his young wife.
For this purpose, he armed himself with a pair of daggers or skiens and lay in hiding near where the blood and bones were strewn.
