- Riddles are a great pass-time in long Winter evenings and it is an ancient custom to tell riddles. The riddles I heard locally are not very easy to answer but I will describe a few of them.
1. As I went up yon garden wall,
I heard an old man give a call,
His head was flesh, his mouth was horn,
and such an old man never was born.
Answer: a cock crowing.
2. There was a man he had no eyes.
He went out one day to view the skies
He saw a tree with apples on
He took no apples off nor he left no apples on
Answer: There were two apples on the tree he took one off and left one on.
3. Scratch my back and I'm nobody leave me alone and I'm everybody.
