- In July 1923 four young men were driving a lorry from Dublin to Boyle with a load from Dublin to Boyle with a load of flour. On their return they stopped at Jamestown bridge. Two of them decided to go swimming in the Shannon beside the quay. In summer the depth is usually about seven feet. One of the men named White could not swim.
When they entered the water they found it was not very deep near the quay wall so they decided to go out farther. Just as they stepped out White sank to the bottom and could not be found.
