- Long ago in olden times the people used to eat three meals a day. In the morning they would have nothing to eat until they would have their work done. Then they would have porrage and buttermilk. At dinner time they would have a few potatoes and a drop of buttermilk. In some houses they had a table on the middle of the floor and all the people in the house would sit around the table. In smaller houses there was a long narrow table that could be put up when they did not want it and they could let it down.

Food in Olden Times
“In the olden times the people only ate one meal a day.”
In the olden times the people only ate one meal a day. These were the morning meal and the evening meal. The evening meal consisted of oat-meal cake and tea. They rose each morning about five o'clock. They went to work then and took the breakfast at nine o'clock.
