    [?] told me. She was sent on such an errand one November [Day?] morning and was nearly killed by her mother when she has all the things home again with her. She said she saw cabbage thrown at the door and she was afraid she'd have to marry the old fellow of the house if she were the first to enter on November morning, on account of the cabbage at the door.
    Candles-
    Seventy years ago every house had its candle [?], a large deep pan with a leg stand under it. In it tallow was melted for making candles. Plaited [flare?] wicks were soaked in hot tallow and the candles were shaped in a candle-mould. The side of the candle was stuck to the wall. This was their night light when learning their tasks set by the hedge-school master. Less fortunate people had to do with the rush candles, mentioned in connection with "Twelfth Night".
