asleep. When the Black Thief heard them snoring he prepared himself to steal it. So he stole the gold and he put a few sods of turf instead and away he went as fast as he could and there did a hare keep up to him. He turned back again and there was a tree near by and the Black Thief went up on it and the three witches came to it and they were thinking what should they do. So one of them made a hatchet of herself and began breaking it until the cock crew and they had to leave it there and the Black Thief was free.
There did a rich man die near where he was living and there was a lot of money buried with him and they had soldiers minding the gold fearing the Black Thief would steal it. So there was a old man buried in the tomb and he put him standing outside it and put a suit of clothes on him and an old hat. When the soldiers came they saw the man and they fired five or six shots at him and he fell and they thought it was the Black Thief that was shot as they went away. And the Black Thief came and stole the money out of the tomb and he buried the old man in his grave again and he went away.
There was a giant there and the Black Thief thought it would be a good place to hide himself in the giant house. So he hid himself where the giant had some dead bodies and the Black Thief was afraid himself would be killed so he ran out and the giant followed him and he fell outside the door and there was a crow bar near where he fell and he drove it through his eye in his forehead and he ran away and the giant had a pain in his eye.
