prepared in the soil for the potatoes. Each evening, the farmer covers the potatoes in the pit with rushes or dry grass. At the end of the week, or on the approach of rain, he covers the pit with clay. If he covered the pit with clay every evening, when the potatoes were fresh, they would be likely to heat. Wet potatoes must not be put in the pit, or if they are, they must be scattered out to dry on the first fine day. Improperly dried potatoes or hay tends to heat. The clay put on the pit must be one foot in depth to keep out the frost. The pit is shaped like the roof of a one-storey house to prevent the rain from percolating through the clay. The poheen (poivaini) or smallpotatoes. They make up a mehal (meircheal) and go from farm to farm. There is an art in digging potatoes The "scraws" or half rotted sods (in lea land) must be left exposed, so that the frost and rain of winter may crumble them. Badly-dug land produces a bad crop the following year and weeds flourish. Only sufficient potatoes are stored inside in the barn to last for about a fortnight.
