  1. The potato crop.
    Potatoes are grown on our farm. About an acre of land is tilled when nine or ten persons reside in one house. Other small farmers till a half acre or a rood and a half. The amount varies according to size of the farm. My father prepares the land. Farm yard manure is put on the land first. Later ridges are made with four of five sods in each ridge. The spade is used when putting in the seed. Wooden ploughs are not used in this district . Medium size potatoes are used for seed. They are taken into the kitchen and the bean a' tighe cuts them into slits. The children of the house assist her to bring in the potatoes from the barn. She usually puts some lime on the slits before putting them into bags. They are sometimes left two or three days before planting. The spades are not made in the district.
