“It is said that there is a mermaid in Lough Key and that she was seen on several occasions long ago sitting on the shore combing her hair before a drowning occurred in Lough Key.”

When they were at the second island the boat turned on its side and the four people were thrown into the river which is about ten feet deep in that particular spot. None of them were able to swim and they began to shout for help. People who were on the bridge heard them and ran to their rescue, but they were only in time to save two of them. one of the soldiers and a girl. All the night and next morning, soldiers and about two hundred people searched for the other two bodies, and eventually found them. It is said that a man of the district saw the mermaid sitting on the shore of the lake the evening before this happened, combing her hair.
