    whole congregation. MacNally refused and he was strongly supported by Father Tim O'Briene. Mickey Shanagher, of course, claimed, and was generally allowed the victory, but time was marching on. Victoria's rule and the National Board of Education stood for progress and the passing of the hedge school was at hand. Shanagher struggled on for a little while, but his health broke down and he had to give up. He was unmarried and lived alone. Towards the end he set out to walk to the Workhouse Hospital in Castlerea, but he collapsed on the road and died there, within a mile or so of the town, about the year 1868. The neighbours buried him in Tobbereliva cemetery.
