He was a very poor man in his early days and lived with his wife in Balladuff or Newtown as it is called to-day. He began his life of crime one night he decided to hold up and rob men returining from Thomastown fair. He carried out the robbery successfully, and then fled to Brandon HIll (which rises sheer over the town of Graignamanagh) to deposit his plunder in some secret place on its steep side. While hiding on the hill he entered a widow's house to look for something to eat. HIs command was so authoritative and his attitude so menacing that the poor creature dared not refuse to comply with his demand. She immediately prepared a meal for him and placed before him all the food she possessed.
When he sat down to partake of the luncheon he noticed that the widow and her son continued working. He inquired why they were not eating too, whereupon the poor woamn explained that she had no more food. He was(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
