In olden times & even up to thirty & forty years ago children did not begin to boots untill they were seventeen or eighteen only when going to Mass. They went to school both summer & winter in their bare feet. People used to wash their feet in salt & water to harden them. Even still people wash their feet in "Epsom Saltzes" when they are sore or tired. In later years girls wore heavy studded boots. Most of the people in the olden days mended their own boots as leather was very cheap & shoemakers were scarce. In winter men used to stuff their boots with hay to keep their feet warm.- Bailitheoir
