- The present R.C. church in Coone is built close to the spot where an old castle once stood. The church was built between 80 and 90 years ago, and the stones used in it's construction were obtained from the ruins of the castle.At the rear of the cemetery wall, the remains of the moat and the foundations are still to be seen. This castle was known as Crean Castle, and was a property of a branch of the Butler family. It is said that the castle was of great strength, and well equipped to withstand a siege. Subterranean passages were supposed to have led from it to three points in the locality, but the exact location of these is not known.
None of the old people in the vicinity remembers the ruins of the castle, but have heard their parents speak of it as being a crumbling, ivy covered shell. Apparently it was left derelict about tht time of the Confederation of Kilkenny.
When the Butlers were leaving Crean Castle for the last time, they were afraid to take their gold and valuables with them, as, on account of the troubled(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
