   If the tenant had no live stock he was evicted and his holding was sometimes taken by another who was often called a "grabber". The evicted tenant and his wife and family were given a little house by some relative or friend. But some had to go to the workhouse and many emigrated to America.
   The landlord came into possession of the estate as a reward or as payment for the help he gave the English in the conquest of the country and on this account, as well as on account of the rack rents they demanded for little farms - many of which were bog which had been reclaimed by their ancestors, they the landlords were very unpopular but the tenants dared not show any signs of disaffection towards them lest they should be dispossessed and their holdings given to others.
   Under the direction of the landlords the land was divided into farms and these were sub-divided when a member of the family got married but the sanction of the landlord had to be obtained for almost everything done with the farm.
   Besides paying rack rents to the landlords the tenants had also to pay tithes and when these could not be collected in money then efforts to collect them in kind were made. This tax was thought to be unjust and its collection was strongly resented. Many battles were fought in trying to collect it and there was much bloodshed.
   In bad years the tenants appealed to the landlords for a substantial reduction in the rent. They held
