- Soap making was very common in this district long ago. Soap was made from potatoes. First the potatoes were grated with a grater, a piece of perforated tin, having a wooden handle attached to it. Then they were washed again several times until the water in which they were being washed was clear when strained off.
Then the white clean floury part of the potatoes was allowed thicken on the bottom of the basin. When it was quite set or hard it was cut into squares and these squares were used in the same way as soap is used at the present day.
