The castle was built by the founder of the Abbey, and for its protection. It is aid to be haunted by a Phooka, a mischievous spirit, under the form of a black cow. In the bog to the right, and which formerly surrounded this place, and extends as far as Ryecourt, the last wolf in Ireland was killed early in the last century. It was commenced to be drained as far back as 1710, by Captain Bailey, who resided at Castlemore. About three miles further on is Ryecourt, the residence of R. Jonson Rye, esq. The plantations are very extensive and beautiful, the woods containing some of the finest oak in the country, About a mile further on are
