    Tavanagh suffered much during the penal times. In the townland of Skevallly there are the ruins of an old College which in those days was a diocesan Seminary and a refuge for hunted priests. Bishop Keogh lived there and ordained priests. The ruins of the old school- room, bake house , kitchen and a kiln for drying corn are still to be seen. These ruins are called The “Chimneys “. There is a tombstone there beside the door. It is said to have been errected in memory of the bishop’s sisters. The date which is partially obliterated is seventeen hundred and thirty- two (A.D 1732)
