This means of marking cattle has now died away, for a fine was imposed on the buyer. During the trouble times, the people of this locality drove their cattle to Bantry fair, but they were forced to make a path through the mountains, as the bridges were broken down. They also paid "custom" when the beast was sold, one shilling was kept for a cow and six-pence for a calf. This "custom" was for the transport of cattle.
Women usually sold cows especially pigs and bonhams at the fair, as they thought their husbands would not receive(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
