At about the first of June the potatoes are first sprayed and again second sprayed after about three weeks. On St John's night it is customary to light a bush near the potato field so that the smoke would go over the potatoes to prevent the blight.
The potatoes are dug with spades. The small potatoes are picked from the large ones and are boiled for pigs and poultry. The big potatoes are stored in lofts, but those wanting for seed on the following year are usually stored in pits.
