- During the Famine, a fever came which killed all who got it. Those who got the sickness would never stop eating and as they had nothing else to eat, they went to the sea-shore and eat raw shellfish. The bodies were taken to a "Lot" in Skibbereen. One day a man was passing by and he heard a voice from the direction of the Lot saying "Wonder ye wound't do something for us." This he told to his comrades who got a railing placed around the Lot.
