- Local Marriage Customs
Long ago marriages were a lot different from what they are now a days.
The parents of the bride and bridegroom used to meet at a public house or hotel to propose the match. If the bride's dowry was not sufficiently large or if the bridegroom's farm did not please the bride's parents the match was broken. After the marriage the bride and bridegroom, on one horse, accompanied by fiends, used to ride to the bride's home on horse back and see who would arrive home first.
The bride was supposed to be the first person to cross the threshold of her parent's home after the ceremony.
