- Gurranes School
This building was opened as a school in Oct '67. It was formerly used as a cow stall. A small addition was made later. Part of the roof and slate is very old.
Before this was used as a school, there was a kind of hedge school not far away. The pupils were taught in an old stable in Collins' yard. It is still used as a stable and 3 old people remember being taught there by a one handed teacher. They sat on stones at first and later on on logs. They wrote on slate & learned Reading, writing & figures & had some knowledge about the principal stars. In English they were taught, but they spoke Irish also. One of these old men who was born the year of the big snow in 1855 can speak & read Irish fairly well.
He also remembers the teacher going around week by week to teach in the houses in the evenings. He - Dannie Nyhan, Moskeigh has a slight memory of being taught at home in Irish by an old sailor who went from house to house to teach for his meals & lodging. Each small holder or farmer contributing in that way.
