    The ruin in this locality is Castle McAuliffe.

    The ruin in this locality is Castle McAuliffe. It is situated in the townland of Castle McAuliffe in the parish of Newmarket in the Co of Cork and in the barony of Duhallow. Cromwell made an attempt to fall it. He fired a bomb from the Island over to it, he and his men camped in the Island and the fields are still called the camp fields. The stones of the old castle were taken in to build Alworths court in Newmarket which is now a convent and is a very beautiful building. Some of the stones were also taken over to build Wood view house which was owned by the McCarties. The Castle was on the right hand bank of the river Dalua. About the last old chief of the McAuliffes strange legends are
