The floor was nearly always made of earth. Half-doors were very common long ago, but they are not so common now. They were hung outside the ordinary doors and were very useful because while admitting the light they kept the children in and kept out the fowls and dogs.
The fuel most commonly used by the poor people was wood. The children were often sent out in the fine weather gathering bundles of sticks called "brosnas". The richer people used coal and in many cases the farmers supplied coal to the labourer as part payment for his work.- Bailitheoir
