One day as St. Martin's mother was making a cake of wheaten flour, a poor travelling man and woman with a child called to her. The child asked for a bit of dough to bake. This he put into the bastable and put the lid on. Having got help from the woman, the weary travellers again set out on their way.
A little later, when she went to the bastable to put in her own cake, to her surprise she saw a sprig of corn growing up through the little cake left by the beggar's child a short time before.
