- On the road between Tralee and Castlemaine a ghost
used to be seen long ago. This ghost had a goats skin
around her with the horns straight up and chains hanging
off the skin. She used to terrify the people so much
that they used to die of the fright. When they were dead
she used to rob them.
She had a house on a side of a hill and no
one would dare go near the house for it was known as
the "Fairy's House." As no one would dare go the road at night
it was very lonesome.
There lived at this time near Tralee a farmer's son
who used be out gambling very late every night. His father
tried to frighten him so he sent a plough to be repaired
to a blacksmith in Castlemaine. When it was settle the
farmer, having arranged with the blacksmith, sent his son
for the plough.
The blacksmith (wishing) did as he had planned
to keep him late. It was eight o'clock when he left the forge.
The blacksmith took pity on him and asked him to stay
with him that night as he had to pass the road on
which the ghost used to be seen. He said that he
should go home. So off he went.
Before he went home the blacksmith gave him
a half pint of whiskey, as whiskey was cheap at the
