   Nearer and nearer came the noise which sounded like a man's heavy tread. The heavy footsteps drew nearer and nearer, until at last they stopped outside his door. Then the handles were turned but the bolts held the door fast until a blow like thunder sent bolts and hinges flying, and Blake peering over the bed clothes in an agony of terror saw a tall thin man enter the rooms, He was clad in curious old fashioned attire. He paced three times round the room with a slow and heavy tread and for the first time fixed his deep and cavernous eyes on Blake making a sign to him to rise and follow him.

   The trembling young man did not dare to disobey, and putting the beat face he could on the matter, (and) sprang quickly out of bed and follow
