- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)One day a hunting man, whose horse had cast a shoe, called into him, to have the shoe replaced. The forge was small and wretched so the big fellow (the hunting-man) went to walk up and down while the horse was being shod. Poor Jack had not even an old shoe to put on the hoof, so what did he do but take off a shoe from the other hoof and put it on the hoof that lost the shoe at first. The huntsman never noted it at the time anyhow." (Same source, Ed O'Connell).
"Boland's house (see page 81, 82,) was burned in 1800 and seven years later the three Quanes were killed on the evening of Glenogra Fair. Some men were coming home from the fair and the Quanes jeered them about the "Shanavesht." The fight started. One party of them was "Caraveshts" (sic) and the other party was "Shanaveshts." My grandfather was arrested and kept in jail for six weeks as having been one of those in the fight. The parish priest who knew he was innocent got him out of jail." (From James Hartigan, page 136)
Personal note:I remember my father saying that Cloneen (near Fethard) Co. Tipp. used to be a "little hell," with fighting between the "sean-bhests" and carabhait when he was a little boy 90 to 95 years ago (D. O.C.)(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
