   This source - Mrs Hedermann - maintains that the three worst names in the place "were (and are)" Geurin, Aherne and Quain. She relates that while Boland's house was on fire, one of the family, a young girl put her head out through the window and demanded that they be let out. She was wearing a gold chain about her neck and to it was attached a purse of money. Some of the Whiteboys who surrounded the house said they would (let her out) if she gave them the money. She refused and was driven back into the doomed house.

   (The impression which this act of murderous incendiarism made upon the people, is, according to all the stories that one still hears of it, credible and otherwise much more lasting than that created by the famine. I made this remark to Henry Costelloe of Gurrane, Manister and his reply was "why wouldn't it the people thought the famine came from God, but they knew well where the burning came from.")
