There is a moat in Ballingarry - about 1 1/2 miles from the village of Ballylanders and hidden treasure is supposed to be buried there. Many attempts have been made in olden times and in recent times also to get the treasure but something supernatural always frightened the seekers away. In a house long ago in the district near the Moat the following conversation in rhyme took place between two men of the district:-
Mick Dea says Bill Connolly we're all poor sitting down here tonight
But we needn't be so if our spirits were right
Bill hould your tongue is it robbing we'd go
No God forbid says Bill that we'd ever do so.
The part of their conversation about where the treasure was hidden seems to be forgotten but the following words tell of the belief that if the treasure were found it should be immediately brought to the P.P. of the place to bless it otherwise it would melt away again.
When the crock it is placed on your back
To Father O'Brien's you must run in a crack
And tell him to bless it as quick as can be
For fear 'ere a fairy on earth might a glimpse of it see.
Some lives were supposed to be lost digging for gold in that Moat. This was told to me personally by Thomas Collins formerly living in this district now living in
