On St. Stephen's Day the school boys and girls of the district go from house to house " hunting the ran (wren)".
The school children do not dress up but they take with them a holly bush decorated with multicoloured ribbons. They usually go in pairs.
They recite the following at each door.
" The "ran", the ran, the king of all birds
On St. Stephen's Day he was caught in the furze
Although he is little his honour is great
Rise up landlady and give us a "trate".
As I was going up Thornhillawan
I saw a "ran" upon the wall
I up with my wattle and gave him a full
And knocked himn into my ladies lawn
So up with the "kittle" and down with the pan
Give me my answer and let me begone (or)
A penny or two to bury the "ran".
