  1. Up to twenty years ago marriages in this part of the country took place in Shrove especially on Shrove Tuesday.
May and October are thought unlucky months for marriage.
Farmers make matches for their children and give them fortunes in money according to their means.
Eighty years ago the old people tell that when there was only one girl who had a farm or money, that she was taken away forcibly and compelled to marry some designing fellow who wanted to get possession of her farm. Often when the girl found out their intention she escaped to some neighbour's house through the back window. People do not remember marriages taking place in the houses.
On the wedding day the bride dressed in a blue gown generally and has hat and gloves to match.
