Irish hurling and Irish dancing seem to have gone hand in hand in those days throughout country and our own rural district was no exception. There was not one of the old people but could do some of the most difficult steps imaginable. Our grandfathers and grandmothers danced we are told, even when they had to lean on the back of a chair for support. In some parts of the country the Irish hurling game seems to have faded out, as the lines of Thomas Francis Meagher show :-
You have the Irish dances yet,
Where is the Irish hurling gone ?
Of two such lessons why forget
The noble and the manlier one ?
