- Old Houses 14-10-38
Most of the houses were thatched in former times. Some of them were thatched with rushes which were got on the hills. Others were thatched with straw which was got from corn. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed under the clevvy. This bed was called a settle-bed.
The fireplace was always placed at the gable [placed] walls. The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones and wattles. There are no accounts of houses which had not glass windows. The floors were made of stone, flags, and clay.
Half-doors are very common in the district and were common in olden times. Turf and sticks were used for the fire. Rushlights were used for showing light as night.- Bailitheoir
