- There are various superstitious practices connected with May Eve. Some of these are preserved up to the present while many others have now been forgotten or have ceased to be practiced.
1. Long ago people would never give away anything on May Eve.
2. If they did give away milk they put salt in it
3. They sprinkled Easter Water on gardens and fields to save the crops.
4. People would not allow -any- body except the members of the house to light his pipe inside. Taking out of the fire was supposed to be unlucky.
5. People put salt or a piece of iron in the wells
6. It was supposed to be very unlucky to bring in a piece of whitethorn
7. People placed a piece of Quicken tree in the garden to protect their crops.
