- Food in olden timesPeople ate three meals a day in olden times. People always worked in the morning before having breakfast. The breakfast consisted of potatoes and skim milk. Potatoes were also eaten for dinner and sometimes fish or vegetables or meat was used. Porridge made from yellow meal was usually eaten for supper. The household sat round the table when eating and when the meal was over the table was placed against the wall. In this district the table was never hung up after the meals were over. A meal was always eaten before going to bed; potatoes and fish were eaten at this meal. Meat was eaten; always salt/meat. Fish was eaten very often in olden times. Potatoe cake, oat cake and Indian meal cake were eaten. Barm bracks and nuts were eaten on November night, pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, eggs on Easter Sunday.
