    The natives of Barnane

    The lonesome gables roofless walls
    Lay scattered far and wide
    For with the malice of "Old Nick"
    They cleared the country side
    The young and old, the youth and maid,
    The man with brain and brawn
    Were swept like chaff before the wind
    For ever from Barnane
    V
    And foreign bullocks fat and sleek
    Were browsing in the place
    That nurtured once a splendid type
    Of Ireland's grand old race.
    The race these callous tyrants spurned
    For even the dumb "bulláin"
    Was none of them as dearer prized
    Than children of Barnane

    Then down the mountain slope I went
    My bosom rocked with pain
    And hopes for Ireland's freedom gone
