- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)-hinche. St Canic[?] never built a church at Monahuncha but it was there that he wrote the book called "Glas Canicí" or the "Chain of Canice. One day when a man was hunting a stag he saw St Canic praying on the island. The saint bade him come to him and made him promise that he would say nothing of his seeing St Canic until he was on his death bead[?]. When the man was on his death bed he told the people the whole story about his meeting St Canic. After that the people started going to the island and they built a wooden church. This church was broken up by the Danes when they came to Ireland.
No other church was built on the island until the seventh century when St Cronan, patron Saint of Roscrea - built it. There are three kinds of architecture in the monastery at Monahincha. The first is the rough semi-circular arch over the doors and windows; the second is the highly ornamented semi-circular arch; the third is the gothic or pointed arch.
The following story relates how St. Cronan came to Monahincha. St Cronan and his monks sought a place where they could build a residence. They proceeded to the parish of Bourney to a place called Bogawn[?] but looking towards Monahincha they saw the sun shining on it and so fixed the site of their future home on Monahincha.
