- Old Houses.
Long ago the houses were thatched with straw or rushes or flax. They were all built with clay, except a very few. The chimneys were made just like baskets and plastered over with clay. The few houses that were built with stones and mortar were called the "great houses" and were slated. There were two hundred houses in Cloran and they were called "bocain," there was a mill thatched with straw, and a village further on. These houses contained but a kitchen, the beds being hidden by the dresser. All the fowl used to be in the kitchen, over the door, on a roost called a crandy.- Bailitheoir
