In the 17th Century there lived a Bishop of Cashel by the name of Bishop Butler.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
but history states that when moved to tears of compunction, the tears flowed up his forehead on to the pillow.
Another story is told in connection with this Bishop. One day as he sat at an upper window looking on to the town, a beautiful carriage arrived at the hall-door and his sister stepped out. She asked to see the poor brother and was told that he was not at home. Needless to say he was not at home to her. She had seen him at the window and, at the answer by the porter, she dashed into the hall and fired five pistol shots saying that they were for the Bishop if he had had the grit to appear at her request as she realised he was in the house. That done, she entered the carriage and drove away. She did not come to see him again as she was too humiliated at the base conduct made so public. Some maintain that a priest did not attend him before he died but on fairly authentic information it can be believed that the necessary faculties were obtained and that he died in the Lord. The ruins of the house in which he died are to be seen and the river runs in front of it.
