- '' Thraneens''
About thirty years ago the people of this district found great profit in cutting and selling
'' thraneens'' Thraneens were a kind of grass with seed on the head of it ; - the word '' thraneen'' means '' a little straw''. It used be cut with a '' thraneen hook'', and threshed with a flail. The seed was then put into bags, each , to weigh a stone, and brought to Clonmel to be sold. They usually got about four shillings a stone for it. It was called in Ireland at that time, '' the poor man's harvest''
This seed was exported to foreign countries, and there used as grass seed.
