- The following are some of the festival customs of long ago.On May Eve the people sprinkle the farm and stock with holy water. On Saint Brigid's Eve the people made what they called "Saint Brigid's Crosses" out of rushes and hung them on the out-offices and dwelling-house. They also hung out a ribbon that Saint Brigid would bless it. This ribbon was said to be a cure for a sore throat. At midnight on New Year's Eve there was a procession through the streets, and they had a band and bells to ring out the old year and to ring in the new year. This custom is not practised at the present time.Another custom is on Saint John's Eve there are bon-fires lighted in the fields. On Saint Patricks Day the people wear shamrock on their coat in honour of the Blessed Trinity.
