   The marriage was not known to Scanlan's parents or immediate friends and some time later his father and his stately ambitious mother wished him to marry a certain lady whose social standing in County Limerick was very high. After a short time matters were becoming very inconvenient for Scanlan and his low-born peasant wife was beginning to be a burthen on him. It was said that Scanlan remained at times with An Cailín in lodgings in the village of Glin leaving his parents under the impression that he went there on shooting expeditions. He was know in this village as a reckless fellow and many disreputable acts were put to his credit. In this village lived a low down, drunken scoundrel named Stephen Sullivan. It was supposed that this Sullivan was a foster-brother of Scanlan's. Scanlan was in terms of intimacy with this dark-souled villain and associated with him openly in the village of Glin. It was this scoundrel who subsequently murdered An Cailín Bán at Scanlan's instigation. This Sullivan was for some unknown reason popularly nicknamed "Shampy" by the villagers.
   On the 13th July 1819 Scanlan and Shampy took the unsuspecting girl for a row on the Shannon. They had previously made up their minds to do away with her. The innocent girl was delighted to have a
