   Cailín Bán could not be produced there could be no charge made against anybody. All kinds of rumours were current in the district and every one suspected that Scanlan had "done away" with An Cailín Bán No one, however, dare accuse him openly as he and his people occupied an influential position in the district and in the absence of any positive proof the accuser would be severely punished by by Scanlan and his family.
   Some two months later the nude body of a female was found on the opposite shore to Carrigafoyle on the Clare side. The place is called [?] which is about two miles from this school and in this parish of Killimer. Her remains were found by two fishermen on the shore. They gave it a temporary burial and reported the matter immediately to the Kilrush police. From the nude condition of the body it is certain that the inhuman murderer "Shampy" stripped the ill-fated woman of her clothes (which was already stated were now worn by Shampy's sister). an inquest was held on the body to which Mrs Ellen Walsh and many other witnesses were summoned from Glin. Mrs. Walsh told the Coroner and jury all she knew about the night of the 134th July 1819. She also without difficultly identified the remains as those of Mrs. Ellen Scanlan (formerly Ellen Hanly and known locally as An Caillín Bán). She swore she saw Mary Sullivan - Shampy's sister wearing the clothes -
