- Long ago children did not wear shoes until they were fifteen or sixteen years of age but nowadays children hardly even go barefoot especially in towns. Poor children sometimes do but only in summer and a barefoot child in winter is hardly ever seen.
There were many shoemakers in Ennis long ago but there are only a few now. Mr. Casey of Cloughleigh is one. He is well over seventy years and cannot do much work now. Mr. Boyle of the turnpike was another shoemaker. There is numerous cobblers or people who mend shoes in the towns. All shoes worn now are made in factories and that is why shoemakers are scarce. Clogs were made by Mr. Howard of Coach Lane. There was a tannery in Ennis long ago in Parnell St. owned by a Mr. Mac Donnell - The Coffeys of Parnell St. also had a tannery. Cures
