“There was an old school at Moyhill...”
There was an old school at Moyhill to which all the people of Moyhill went for their Education. It was built with stones and there was a thatched roof on it. It was taught by Patrick Liddy in the day time for the children and in the night time for older people. He had a room in one end of it in which he used sleep. Every scholar had to pay a penny a week for his education. He used teach them to read and spell and money sums. Every one had to buy his own books in the shops. They used write with quills and ink. They had not any desks but a long table and few forms at each side of it. He used not teach any Irish. They used have slates and pieces of gravel for writing sums and some other subjects on them. The master used have a larger slate left on a box for writing. Anthony Considine from Maurice's Mills used go from house to house teaching night school. He used spend two or three nights in a townland and all in the townland used come to the house he would select. He used live at Maurice's Mills and he used teach school at Leahys in Martree, at Kellys in Derry, at Gormans in Drumduff and also near Inagh.
