- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)of which was to be seen in many a country house still, and which was worked by the foot like a sewing machine. The flax hung on a "bush" in the fore part of the wheel and the spinner would run the flax through a small case something like the barrel of a writing pen, into the whorl where it was twisted into a very fine thread. This thread was then made into balls ready for the linen weaver who wove it into cloth of different grades; some rough, some very fine. This cloth was used for making shirts, sheets, and all kinds of bed linens also table cloths, towels, and other things for the house-hold such as corn sacks. The thread was also used for making hemp, fishing nets, and ropes. It was very hard work but the people had not other means of procuring these things.
